If the ratio of BUN (blood urea nitrogen) to serum creatinine is greater than 25, the cause of kidney failure is probably pre-renal (i.e., dehydration). If the ratio is less than 20, the cause is probably intrinsic renal disease. Ratios between 20 and 25 are ambiguous.
