CATCHING A FREIGHT TRAIN
When catching a moving freight train, as you grab the hand iron with one hand your body will be thrown towards the train at a speed that is the difference between your speed and the speed of the train! Never try to catch faster than 3 seconds per standard car length.

HOBOS AND FREE BLACKBERRIES
Where Hobos used to camp or wait for freight trains, outside old rail yards, blackberries tend to grow.

SCENERY FROM A FREIGHT TRAIN
In built-up areas, the scenery from a freight train will show the worst of a city or town. But, from a freight train, you can often see a better view of natural areas than from an automobile. And you can see much more of nature from any train than a jet.

DEAD MAN'S CORNER
In the typical suburban shopping center, with a parking lot in front, the smart business man will avoid the area at the inside corner of an L shaped building. It may have a lot of floor area, but it typically has little frontage or exposure to the public view.

WALKING SPEED
An average walking speed is about 5 km/h (3 mph), although this depends heavily on factors such as height, weight, age and terrain. Walking at 3mph, it would take 20 minutes to walk a mile. If you see an instruction telling you to walk briskly - then it means - walk at three miles an hour. - Wikipedia and other sources

MEASURING WITH A DOLLAR BILL
A US Dollar bill is 6 1/8" long. By folding back part of the margin of the bill or 1/8" you have a 6" long piece of paper. Folding this in half, thirds etc, you can easily measure 2", 3", 4" 6" et cetera very easily, and fairly accurately.

A ROMAN ARMY MILE
The average Roman's footstep was a little shorter than ours today, but can still help estimate a mile. Marching in step, and marking the times the left foot strikes the ground, a mile would count 1000 drum beats.
