LUMBER MEASUREMENTS
The actual measurements of lumber don't match the spoken size (A 2x4 isn't actually 2 inches by 4 inches, its 1.5"x3.5") Up to 2 inches, the actual measurements are less by a quarter inch (1/4"), from 2"-8", they're less by half an inch, and above 8", less by three-quarters.

DETERMINING CORRECT TIRE PRESSURE
1: Measure the tire pressure when the tires are cold 2: Drive the car aggressively until the tires are warm. 3: Get out of the car and immediately measure the pressure. If the original (cold) pressure was correct, the new pressure will be 10% higher. If it is more than 10% higher, the original pressure was too low. If less than 10% higher, it was too high.

WORKING ON SMALLER SOFTWARE PROJECTS.
For smaller software projects, I follow the principle of "Make it work, then make it fast, then make it pretty". Once the application works, optimize it. Only when it works and it's fast, should one spend time making it pretty (i.e., appealing yet functional).

USING A THESAURUS
If you're using a thesaurus to avoid repeating a word, then you're probably repeating an idea. If you're definitely not repeating an idea, then repeating the word will be make things clearer.
