START WITH YOUR CHARACTERS
Always figure out who your characters are before you figure out your plot. You can follow a good character through a bad plot, but you can't make a good plot out of a bad character.

THE SECOND-BEST SWORDSMAN
From Mark Twain: "The best swordsman in the world doesn't need to fear the second-best swordsman; no, the person for him to be afraid of is some ignorant antagonist who has never had a sword in his hand before; he doesn't do the thing he ought to do, and so the expert isn't prepared for him."

HOW TO CRITICIZE
"The other day I learned the rules for playing snowballs with 5-year olds: a.) Be careful to just compact the snowballs enough to make them hold together b.) Aim comfortably wide of the mark. I suddenly realized that these are also good rules for offering criticism to anyone, big or small." - Robert Westbury
