If a woman is in labor and you want to know if there is time to get her to the hospital, check for the child's head during a contraction. If you can't see it and it is the woman's first child, you have at least an hour. If you can see a quarter's worth, you have 20 or 30 minutes. If you can see a quarter's worth and she has had a child before, you don't have time.
