SWIMMING FOR EXERCISE
A swimmer needs to exert less energy than a runner to get the same aerobic benefit because his body is in a horizontal position and his heart pumps more blood per beat than it does when his body is upright. To calculate your ideal heart rate while swimming, subtract your age from 205 and multiply by .70. If your rate is higher than 205 minus your age times .85, you're working harder than you have to.
