DRIVING IN FREEZING RAIN
When driving in freezing rain crack your window slightly to listen for the sound of water splashing from the tires. When the splashing ceases the road conditions have changed to ice.

ILLUSTRATION TIP
To check an illustration for "errors" in a computer illustration program use the reflect tool. For example: I frequently draw "big hair' on the right side of a subject, flipping the drawing exposes this nicely! (If you're drawing on paper, flip it around and hold it up to the light.)

Electricity
CALCULATE THE COST OF POWERING A COMPUTE
If you know the amount of heat a box puts out, in BTU, you can determine the cost of the electricity to power and cool it. BTU / 2510 * $/kWhr * hours/month = cost/month For example, if electricity costs 10ยข per kWhr, and there are on average 730 hours in a month, then each 1000 BTU server costs $29 per month in cooling and electricity. If you don't know the BTU, multiply the wattage times x 3.5 to obtain the BTU.

Politics
HOW MANY PEOPLE FEEL THE SAME WAY?
Most people don't contact elected officials with their opinions. Therefore, politicians attach a "weight" to comments from constituents. A form e-mail reflects the opinion of 5 people. A personal e-mail reflects the opinion of 10 people. A fax reflects the opinion of 10 people. A postcard reflects the opinion of 10 people. A form letter (paper) reflects the opinion of 20 people. (This includes handwritten notes that are obviously part of an organized letter-writing event.) A phone call reflects the opinion of 30 people. A truly personal letter reflects the opinion of 50 people.

PIZZA FOR A CROWD
Half a typical medium pizza per person for lunch, half a large pizza per person for supper. Use this ratio of toppings: 1/2 veggie, 1/2 plain cheese, 1 all the way, 1 pepperoni, 1 pepperoni and mushroom.

WRITING A ROLEPLAYING GAME
Minimize page flipping, even though it means---sometimes repeatedly---duplicating information. It saves wear and tear on the book and on the reader's patience.

OPPORTUNITIES IN LITERATURE
Don't think of a difficult word as the author imposing on you, think of a difficult word as your opportunity to expand your vocabulary.

KEEPING AND DELETING PHOTOS
The average photographer should (and should expect to) delete about 85 percent of the photos you shoot. If you want three good shots, you should take 20- to 25 pictures.

START DEBUGGING AT THE WALL SOCKET
Always get the obvious questions out of the way first. This is not only a good heuristic for finding problems quickly, it's a good rule of thumb for a repairman to quote when you have to ask an unhappy customer "dumb" questions. Note that this rule of thumb is often misused, as in the joke where a simpleton loses his keys in the street, but looks on the sidewalk because "the light is better over there."
Bill Coderre, programmer, San Jose, CA, USA
