Building
MIXING FRESH ADOBE
Good adobe bricks are made from sandy clay or clay loam. If the mixture is too rich in clay, it will stick to your hoe; too rich in sand, your hoe will come up clean. The mixture is just right if it barely slips from your hoe, leaving traces of mud on the blade as you work it.

THE OLD RULE FOR PROGRAMMING A COMPUTER
A computer program in a good high-level language can be written about five to ten times as fast as the same program in assembly language, but it will be longer and run slower.

College
SPOTTING A FUTURE SUCCESS
A research director can explain a research project to the layman better than a tenured professor; a tenured professor can do it better than an assistant professor; an assistant professor better than a graduate student. A graduate student who can explain it well is going to be a research director.

TEACHING SPELLING
When announcing spelling words for average senior-high-school students, pronounce them at the rate of 1 word every 12 seconds. Difficult words can be recalled and written in that period of time if the student knows them. And this interval is short enough that students won't get bored by the easy words.

Flying
MAXIMIZING YOUR ENDURANCE IN AN AIRPLANE
Maximum endurance in an airplane is attained at its "best-rate-of-climb" speed, or Vy. Vy, listed in the airplane's manual, approximates the maximum lift-over-drag ratio; it requires the least amount of power to maintain level flight. If you become lost, this speed will stretch the fuel supply and give you more time to spot landmarks or summon help by radio.

USING A MOVIE CAMERA
Count at least ten seconds every time you press a movie camera's start button. The biggest single error that novice film makers make is taking many shots in very short spurts.
