THE LONG RULE OF IDENTIFYING BAKELITE
Visually, the colors should be bright and very deep. Also, since Bakelite is cast, there should be no seams or mold lines. The sound of two Bakelite pieces striking one another is unmistakable. It's been likened to the sound of a drumstick on a coconut shell - more of a 'clunk' than a 'click' or a 'clack.' The smell of Bakelite is distinctive; people say it smells like carbolic acid. To get the smell, get the Bakelite warm with hot water or with friction - by rubbing it briskly on your clothing. There is also a heft to Bakelite. It tends to be fairly dense, fairly heavy for the amount of material.
