ESTIMATING CHEESE PORTIONS
Use a woman's thumb to estimate how much cheese you're eating. Very hard cheeses, such as aged Parmesian (which has very little water content) will weigh more than soft ones, such as Monterey Jack (which has more moisture), but in general, one thumb-size chunk is about an ounce.

PLANNING A HIKE
Plan on one hour for every three miles of hiking plus 1/2 hour for every 1,000 foot increase in elevation. For example, a six mile hike up a 2,000 foot mountain would take three hours.
