COMMUTING IN TOKYO
In Tokyo, a bicycle is faster than a car for most trips of less than 50 minutes. The same is true against trains, except during rush hours; then the break point is about 30 minutes. A motorcycle, ridden carefully but without regard for the law, is twice as fast as a car.
David A. Lloyd-Jones, Tokyo, Japan

BUYING AN ENGINE
If you are checking out a used engine that doesn't run, ignore the cleanliness of the outside and look into the carburetor throat. If it is stained reddish brown, chances are good that the engine has been well cared for. A black stain below the choke butterfly is an indication of a tired engine.

FINDING A SAFE FOLLOWING DISTANCE
Forget calculating car lengths. The safe following distance for a car is 2 seconds behind the vehicle in front of you (assuming dry pavement.) Figure from the time that the back of the car ahead passes a shadow or crack on the road to the time the front of your car reaches it. This rule is self-adjusting for speed.

NECK TIES
To check the quality of a neck tie, look on the back of the widest end where the fabric folds up into the tie. Look in the "pocket" there for a piece of fabric- usually white- that is used to "stiffen" the tie. This will have stripes on it. More stripes means higher quality.

SKIP THE SALT, DROP THE WATER WEIGHT
If a prepackaged meal has more than 700 mg of sodium, don't buy it. The extra sodium will cause added water weight.
