A semipermeable row of plants will shelter the ground behind it for a distance 20 times the height of the plants - whether they are 10 inches or 200 feet tall. For example, a shelterbelt of 60-foot poplars with a shrubbery understory will protect the soil downwind for 1,200 feet - regardless of windspeed.
