TELLING DAY FROM NIGHT
During Ramadan, the sacred ninth month of the Moslem year, fasting is practiced daily from sunrise to sunset. For people lacking better indicators, the point when day becomes night is the point when you can't tell a black thread from a white one.
George Sheldon, artist and traveler

ENJOYING A HOCKEY GAME
Immediate gratification aside, a 4-3 win for your team makes for a much better hockey game than a 6-0 win.

BROKEN BOLT OR STUD
If a bolt or stud is rusted and twists off in cast iron when you try to remove it, carefully weld on the end of the piece, slowly building it up to project above the cast iron surface about 1/4 inch or so depending on bolt size. Place an appropriate size nut over the projecting weld and weld it in place to the projection. Let it cool slightly, then carefully work with a wrench to remove the bolt end. The heat usually breaks the rust loose.

THE LIGHT BULB RULE
An average 60-watt bulb will burn-out in about the same time it takes to go through 100 ordinary coffee filters. Buy bulbs whenever you see coffee filters on your shopping list and you'll never find yourself in the dark.

BROWNIES ARE DONE
Cook brownies only for as long as it takes to smell them cooking - if left in the oven for as long as the box says, they will be overdone. Also, before adding the eggs, put them in a small bowl of water. If they float, they're past their freshness.

MULTI-SPEAKER SYSTEMS IN HOME THEATERS
Multi-speaker systems for home theaters are a waste of money. These systems were designed for commercial movie theaters, which assume the speakers are placed many feet apart from each other. For a residential TV room, a pair of nice stereo speakers will suffice.

BREATHING THROUGH YOUR HEATER COIL
Check your car's heater coil for obstructions after you backflush it. If you can blow through it as easily as you can breathe, it's free of debris.
