Children
SETTING A CHILD'S ALLOWANCE
A child's allowance should be large enough to cover some basics with a little left over, yet small enough to require choices. Too little or too much of an allowance will not teach a child how to deal with money.

Temperature
CHECKING YOUR CHARCOAL
Your fire is ready when the charcoal is light gray. Test the heat by holding your hand, palm side down, over the coals at grid level and counting the seconds you can hold it there. Five seconds indicates a low temperature fire, four seconds - medium temperature, three seconds - medium-high, two seconds - hot, and one second indicates a fire that is too hot.

CHOOSING A CHRISTMAS TREE
When you're choosing a Christmas tree, rotate the end of a branch between your forefinger and thumb. If the tree is fresh, you won't end up with a handful of needles.

Wind
FLYING A KITE
A wind that rustles leaves and that you can barely feel on your face is blowing from 4 to 7 miles an hour. A wind moving about 12 miles an hour will keep tree leaves in constant motion. This is the upper limit for most kite flying. If the wind is lifting loose paper off the ground and raising dust, it is too strong for the average kite.

Writing
GET A RUNNING START RULE
At the end of a long writing day (and with more to come), leave your final thoughts, concepts, etc. unwritten - save them for the next day's beginning. This helps to stir up the writing juices, particularly re: dealing with Blank White Page Dread.
Will Musham, composer/writer, Chicago, Illinois, USA
