DOUBLING YOUR POPULATION
You can quickly calculate the number of years it will take for a population to double by dividing the number 72 by the population's growth rate.

ESTIMATING SIZE WITH MATCHES
At arm's length, the width of a paper matchstick covers a space 5 yards wide 1,000 yards away. The narrow width of a carpenter's pencil spans 10 yards. Conversely, if you know the size of the object you're sighting, you can work backwards to figure out how far away it is.

MOVIE SEQUELS
As a rule, if you didn't care for the original movie, you will like the sequel even less.

COMPARING A DOG'S AGE TO A HUMAN'S AGE
The old rule--multiplying a dog's age by 7 to find the equivalent human age--is fallacious. A dog is able to reproduce at 1 year and has reached full growth by 2 years. To calculate a dog's age in human terms, count the first year as 15, the second year as 10, and each year after that as 5.

SPOTTING THE MURDERER
In a mystery play on your local stage, the murderer will be the best actor among the suspects. In a mystery TV show, the murderer will be the best-known actor.

BUYING VINTAGE DOS AND DON'TS
Do ask about a piece's history, who designed it, if it's original. Don't buy from someone who can't give you an answer. Do expect wear, vintage pieces are 50+ years old they will show some signs of use. Don't accept items that are beat up, broken, or in poor condition.
Elle Greene, AustinModern.com MidCentury Vintage dealer, Austin Texas, Austin, TX, USA

MARKETING VS. SUCCESS FOR MOVIES
The amount of advertising and cross-marketing you see is inversely proportionate to how good the movie will end up being (especially true in Los Angeles).

WAITING IN LINE AT A SUPERMARKET
The later you shop at a supermarket, the more likely you are to wait in line longer -- not because of fewer cashiers, but because shoppers tend to cash out in clusters.

CUT THE HOLE TO FIT THE PATCH
If you are patching a hole in a wall, in a metal object or anything else, cut the hole to fit the patch, not the other way around. This will save hours of tedious labor.
