START DEBUGGING AT THE WALL SOCKET
Always get the obvious questions out of the way first. This is not only a good heuristic for finding problems quickly, it's a good rule of thumb for a repairman to quote when you have to ask an unhappy customer "dumb" questions. Note that this rule of thumb is often misused, as in the joke where a simpleton loses his keys in the street, but looks on the sidewalk because "the light is better over there."
Bill Coderre, programmer, San Jose, CA, USA

DIAPER BAG PACKING
Always pack two more diapers than you think you need. Your child will poop more if you don't pack extra, less if you do. Better to lug the extra around than to be stranded with a poopy baby.

ORTHOGRAPHY AND HYGIENE IN RESTAURANTS
If you find 3 or more typos in the menu, ask for bottled water; 6 or more, consume only that water; 9 or more, take the menu home as a souvenir.

LEAKING WATER HEATERS
You need to check your water heater twice a year to avoid it going out at the worst time (like the day you're leaving on vacation). Put something that you use once or twice a year (such as a drain plunger) next to the heater. Whenever you use the plunger, check the heater connections for corrosion or moisture.

FINDING DEEP WATER
To find the deepest water in a river, look for the middle of the inverted V of glossy water where the main current flows. At a bend in a river, the water's deepest on the outside of the turn.

ENTERING THE GROUND CUSHION
The ground cushion is an invisible area near the runway where the interaction between the airplane's wing and the ground cause changes in an airplane's flight characteristics. Measured scientifically, the height of the ground cushion is about equal to the wingspan of the airplane. A pilot, however, will notice the effects at an altitude half the wingspan of the airplane.

MEETING YOUR GOALS
If you always try to do more than you planned to do instead of stopping to congratulate yourself for getting something done, you probably work too hard to be effective and you may be damaging your health.
