The deeper a scuba diver descends, the more nitrogen he absorbs from the air he is breathing. Increased levels of nitrogen in the blood cause an intoxicating condition known as nitrogen narcosis or "rapture of the deep." Divers will often use martinis as a rough measure of narcosis: each 50 feet of depth makes you feel as disoriented as one martini on an empty stomach.
